afilm Mentoring programme
MENTORING
“Afilm gives us the opportunity to see our most passionate students grow as artists and become agents for change- it’s an incredible privilege to see how the seeds planted at afilm, grow and blossom into powerful stories. Through our mentoring programmes we hope to contribute in a tiny way to making this a more just, tolerant world. I feel humbled to be a part of their stories and their lives.”Yolanda Torres, afilm founder

Students selected for the Film Mentoring programme have proven their passion and commitment to visual storytelling, to sharing their explorations into the human condition. We believe these storytellers have the drive and conviction necessary for provoking change, for making this world a better place for all.

Independent Film Studies program

Upon completion of either year long Certificate programs, afilm offers its top students the opportunity to develop their own personal filmmaking projects through the MENTORING Independent Film Studies program. By invitation only, qualifying students must present a proposal for their unique project as well as a calendar for how the project will be developed, stage by stage. If selected, a faculty member will then supervise the project, including work sessions, skype meetings for consultations, screenplay and editing analysis and so forth. Students are encouraged to present joint projects, forming collaborations with their classmates.

“For me it’s very important I have the chance to be a part of the afilm Independent study program now. I had an opportunity to practice and develop my skills on different film projects during this time. And also wrote and shot my first feature film, “I Love Her”. It couldn’t have happened without an amazing team of other afilm students. To take your first steps is always very hard and I thank my mentors and teachers of afilm International workshops who support me during the whole process.”Darya Petrenko (I Love Her)

afilm alumni to have participated in this project have extended their stay in Barcelona to develop their projects. Projects accepted into the MENTORING Independent Film Studies program to date include the afilm alumni independent feature films,  “I Love Her” by award-winning Ukraine Director Darya Petrenko, “Requiem of a Place” by Director Mikhail Chernikov (USA/Georgia), and a collective feature documentary, “Strangers in Barcelona”, set in Barcelona by Director Miguel Rivera (Mexico). Most recently, Chabel Bou-Antoun has joined us to complete his empowering feature documentary, “Dancing with Dolly”, the story of survivors of acid attacks in India.

“For me the Independent Study program at afilm has been an amazing opportunity to develop, write, shoot and produce a project with a wonderful team of other afilm filmmakers. This program has been an important step for me in my journey to becoming a mature filmmaker. It has allowed me to really hone and apply the skills that were taught in the Introduction program. It really is an amazing experience so far and I thank afilm for providing me with this opportunity.”Mikhail Chernikov (Requiem of a Place)
