DIRECTING THE ACTOR FOR FILM

with James Duff

Prague Film School Directing and former Stone Street Studios/ NYU Tisch drama Instructor James Duff’s 3 day Directing the Actor for Film Workshop covers practical actor directing training, specifically for the camera. Open to both filmmakers and actors.

A graduate of the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts, MFA Directing, James has created a practical, hands-on workshop where directors have the opportunity to audition, rehearse and shoot scenes with actors, under his guidance. Prior to the beginning of the workshop, directors and students will receive copies of the scenes to be worked on, so they may prepare fully.  Each member of the workshop will receive a copy of the material they shoot, for use in their showreel.

DAY ONE: SCENE STRATEGY / AUDITION STRATEGY / AUDITIONS / Rehearsal

James will work with students to develop a strategy for the scene each director is to direct.  Next, he will guide the director, so they may develop a strategy for the audition process.  Then actors will come to audition for students, each student will get a chance to direct one or more of the auditionees.   Finally, students will rehearse their scene with the actors they have cast.

DAY TWO: CLASS REHEARSAL  I. / SHOOT

Students will bring in their scenes and have one hour each to rehearse in the workshop.   At the end of his/her respective hour, each student will shoot a fluid master for their showreel.

DAY THREE: CLASS REHEARSAL  II. / SHOOT

Students will bring in their scenes and have one hour each to rehearse in the workshop.   At the end of his/her respective hour, each student will  shoot a fluid master for their showreel.
