ACTOR’S STUDIO

The afilm Actor’s Studio is lead by actress/ playwright/ director Amy Blaise:  “I recently talked to an actress right after the presentation of an afilm short in which she had the lead role. I had noticed that while watching the film she often laughed and hid her face in her hands. Afterwards she told me it was the first time she had seen herself on film. She shared with me all the things she would have done differently if only she had been aware of how she came off on screen.  I was very surprised by this, as she already had several years of acting classes under her belt and was obviously a very talented actress. And yet she had little awareness of what it really means to act on film.”

The strength of afilm's programs is in its title: afilm Workshops. It is a hands-on, creative, professional, and personalized environment whose goal is to recreate, as much as possible, a real working environment.

What does this mean in the Actor’s Studio? As an actor, you come with only one tool: You. The goal of this 8 month course is to make you not only aware of what it means to make a film, but also of how what you bring of yourself can be made relevant to a character or a script.  You will be given ample opportunity to learn the craft of acting for film in a nurturing, but very professional, setting. You will work alongside other students from other film programs, such as Introduction, Digital Feature Film, Cinematography, etc.  You will have the opportunity to audition for afilm projects. In addition to your classes, once a week you will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of lab filmmaking exercises. Our small classes mean there will be plenty of time to analyze your recorded performances.

In the Actor’s Studio we will also explore some of the most important acting questions: How can you follow your instincts and be spontaneous when acting? How do you break down a scene intellectually while still staying emotionally connected, honest and “in the moment”?  How do you learn one of the actor's most important tools:  Listening.

The Actor's Studio explores all of these points by bringing together different methodologies, each one exploring a different aspect of the actor’s craft. It is divided up into improvisation, scene work and preparing for an audition.  Improvisation classes help unleash your imagination and make you think on your feet. Improvisation teaches you how to create in the moment and respond to the stimulus of your immediate environment and inner feelings. In these sessions you will explore everything from the famous “Method” instructor Stanford Meisner’s repetition exercises, Viola Spolin’s Theatre Games, Commedia dell arte physicality and space work.

Our goal in the Actor’s Studio is not only for you to explore what it is to be an actor, but also to have a wide range of acting experiences. You will leave this course with an impressive reel that will include acting before the camera and in front of an audience. You will be able to go into a casting situation or onto a film set already aware and prepared. We hope you will leave here not only understanding the craft of acting, but also the role you have to play in this art.
