THE PRIMAL ELEMENTS  ACTING LAB

with Amy Blaise

afilm proudly presents director/ playwrite / actress Amy Blaise’s three week Beginning Actor’s Lab.

This workshop explores the craft of acting, different acting techniques are explored through innovative improvisation exercises and scene work. The workshop ends with a special session on how to audition.

The objective of this Beginning Actor’s Workshop is to expose beginning actors to what it means to be an actor, both intellectually and emotionally. How can you follow your instincts and be spontaneous when acting? How do you break down a scene intellectually while still staying emotionally connected, honest and “in the moment”?

This workshop explores all of these points by bringing together different methodologies, each one exploring a different aspect of the actor’s craft. It is divided up into improvisation, scene work and preparing for an audition.   Improvisation classes help unleash your imagination and make you think on your feet. Improvisation teaches you how to create in the moment and respond to the stimulus of your immediate environment and inner feelings. In these sessions you will explore everything from the famous “Method” instructor Sanford Meisner’s repetition exercises, Viola Spolin’s Theatre Games, Commedia dell arte physicality and space work.

In the scene work sessions you will learn how to use the imagination you have unleashed in your improvisation classes to bring emotion to your scenes. You then learn how to let go of that preparation and react moment-to-moment.  Learn the difference between acting and reacting and how to shift focus from yourself to your acting partner. Study how to break down a scene, make choices about your character and find your objective. Uncover the relationships, conflicts, humor and opposites in a scene.

The audition sessions will help you prepare for “cold” readings, teach you how to break down a scene quickly while making your audition performance both truthful and effective.   Each actor will prepare a monologue that will be analyzed by the instructor. It will then be filmed for you to have a show reel to take home with you.
